What fruits should pregnant women avoid eating?
Pregnant women should avoid or limit consumption of fruits that may cause uterine contractions, internal heat, or diarrhea, such as hawthorn, longan, lychee, unripe papaya, and pineapple. During pregnancy, the diet should be mild, avoiding frozen or unwashed fruits, and high-sugar fruits (e.g., durian, mango) should be controlled. The total daily fruit intake is recommended to be around 200g-350g, with attention to nutritional balance.
Fruits to Avoid or Limit During Pregnancy:
· May cause miscarriage/uterine contractions:
Hawthorn: May induce uterine contractions, especially in early pregnancy.
Unripe green papaya: Contains substances similar to oxytocin, which may cause uterine contractions.
Pineapple: It contains a high amount of bromelain, which may cause allergies or increase the risk of premature birth in a very small number of pregnant women. It is recommended to consume it in moderation.
· High sugar content/easy to cause internal heat:
Litchi and longan (guava): These are hot-natured fruits. Consuming them in large quantities can easily cause internal heat, dry stools, and in severe cases, may lead to fetal heat, miscarriage, or premature birth.
Mangosteens: High in sugar and calories, they may increase the risk of gestational diabetes and are also prone to causing internal heat.
· Cold/Prone to Diarrhea:
Watermelon, persimmon, honeydew melon, and dragon fruit: These are cold-natured foods that can easily cause diarrhea if consumed in excess by pregnant women with weak digestive systems or a cold constitution.
· Others:
Mango, pineapple, kiwi: May cause allergies; those with a history of allergies should be cautious.
Frozen fruits: May easily irritate the gastrointestinal tract. "Safe Rules" for Pregnant Women Eating Fruits:
1. Wash and Peel: Thoroughly clean to remove pesticide residues and prevent bacterial contamination (such as Listeria).
2. Moderate intake: No matter what kind of fruit, it should not be consumed excessively, and the daily intake should be kept around 250g.
3. Physical Constitution Differences: Those with a hot constitution should consume fewer warm fruits (such as lychee and durian), while those with a cold constitution should avoid cold fruits (like watermelon).
4. Prioritize seasonal fruits: Fresh fruits and vegetables offer the best nutrition.
Note: In cases of special conditions such as gestational diabetes or hypertension, please follow medical instructions.
